How Type Capitals works
Enter a capital city. If it matches an unanswered country in the active region, that country appears on the map and the score increases.
The prompt is intentionally open rather than country-by-country. To produce every capital, you must organise knowledge by map region and retrieve pairs without being shown the country first. That makes the mode harder than multiple choice and useful as a diagnostic.
Configure the quiz for learning
- Choose one region for a first session.
- Turn the timer off until the pairs are accurate.
- Say the country aloud before entering its capital.
- At the result screen, record the missed pairs rather than only the total.
- Repeat those pairs using Random: Capital Only or Click by Capital.
Accepted alternatives
GeoBlitz accepts punctuation and common language variants for many capitals. Examples include Vienna/Wien, Rome/Roma, Beijing/Peking, and localised forms such as Londres for London. Current names are displayed, while established former names may remain accepted where learners still encounter them.
Countries with more than one relevant capital or seat are handled deliberately. South Africa accepts Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein; Sri Lanka accepts Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte and Colombo; Eswatini accepts Mbabane and Lobamba; Bolivia accepts Sucre and La Paz.
Accepted alternatives exist to recognise defensible answers, not to imply that every seat has the same constitutional role. See methodology and sources.
Where world-capital scores usually break down

Use both directions
Type Capitals tests capital → country recognition because the typed city reveals the country. Random: Capital Only tests country → capital recall because a country is highlighted first. Click by Capital adds a third layer: you must know the pair and locate the country. Rotate through all three before considering a pair secure.
A useful regional sequence
- South America and mainland North America.
- Western and Northern Europe.
- Central Europe and the Balkans.
- North, West, East and Southern Africa.
- West, Central, South, Southeast and East Asia.
- Caribbean and Pacific island states.
After each region, wait at least a day before retesting. Immediate repetition can create a perfect score that reflects short-term memory rather than durable recall.
Spelling without unnecessary penalties
The matcher ignores capitalisation, punctuation and most Latin diacritics, so Malé and Male can both be recognised. This is fair for a geography quiz, but study notes should still use the correct current form. If a city is genuinely misspelled, accepting it would reinforce the error.
Moving toward a perfect world round
- Complete every regional pool untimed.
- Retrieve each pair in both directions.
- Build a separate multiple-capital-country list.
- Review Caribbean and Pacific capitals before combining regions.
- Use Count Up before moving to Count Down.
