Capital-city study plan

How to learn world capitals

Learn capital-country pairs in geographic groups, test both directions, and pay special attention to countries where the best-known city is not the capital.

First learn the relationship, then the spelling

A capital is easier to remember when it belongs to a map, a country and a contrast—not when it appears as one line in a 197-row list.

Begin with a region you already know well. Look at each country’s location and retrieve the capital before checking. Then reverse the direction: see the capital and name or locate the country. GeoBlitz supports both directions through Type Capitals, Random: Capital Only and Click by Capital.

Avoid treating recognition as recall. “Paris looks familiar next to France” is weaker knowledge than producing Paris from a blank prompt.

Group capitals by geography

Europe

Start with familiar Western European capitals, then move through the Nordic countries, Baltics, Central Europe and Balkans. Contrast pairs such as Bratislava/Slovakia and Ljubljana/Slovenia deliberately. Microstate capitals are often identical to or closely associated with the state name, but they still need map context.

Asia

Separate West Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia. Central Asian capitals become manageable as a set: Astana, Bishkek, Dushanbe, Ashgabat and Tashkent. In Southeast Asia, contrast capitals with better-known commercial cities—Naypyidaw rather than Yangon, and Putrajaya as Malaysia’s administrative capital while Kuala Lumpur remains the national capital and largest city.

Africa

Learn North African capitals first, then move through West, Central, East and Southern Africa. The two Congos are a valuable pair: Kinshasa for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Brazzaville for the Republic of the Congo. Côte d’Ivoire’s official capital is Yamoussoukro, not the larger city Abidjan.

The Americas

North and South American mainland capitals are a strong foundation. Then isolate the Caribbean, where many small states are difficult because their flags, islands and capitals are learned at the same time. Contrast Dominica’s Roseau with the Dominican Republic’s Santo Domingo.

Oceania

Practise Pacific capitals as a separate final set. Ngerulmud, Palikir, Majuro, South Tarawa and Funafuti are much easier to retain when attached to Palau, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Tuvalu as one regional cluster.

Countries where one answer needs context

GeoBlitz accepts alternatives to avoid punishing a defensible geography answer. The methodology page explains how capital corrections are reviewed.

A seven-session capital routine

  1. Take an untimed Type Capitals baseline and record missed country-capital pairs.
  2. Study Europe and retrieve every pair in both directions.
  3. Study the Americas, separating mainland and Caribbean capitals.
  4. Study Africa by subregion, with special attention to the two Congos and island states.
  5. Study Asia in five subregional groups.
  6. Study Oceania and revisit every multiple-capital country.
  7. Take a mixed world round, then build the next review list only from misses.

Repeat the missed list one day, three days and one week later. A short review of 15 difficult pairs is usually more valuable than another complete list-reading session.

Memory techniques that remain useful

Meaningful link

Connect the sound or meaning of the capital to the country, but keep the actual spelling visible so the mnemonic does not replace the answer.

Map anchor

Attach the capital to the country’s location and neighbours. This is especially effective for small or similarly named states.

Contrast pair

Practise likely confusions together: Niger/Niamey and Nigeria/Abuja, or Slovenia/Ljubljana and Slovakia/Bratislava.

Reverse retrieval

Alternate country → capital and capital → country. Knowing one direction does not guarantee the other.

Spelling and alternative names

GeoBlitz normalises case, punctuation and common diacritics and accepts many established language variants, such as Vienna/Wien and Rome/Roma. That keeps the assessment focused on geography. However, write the current standard English form in your notes; permissive quiz matching should not become a reason to learn an incorrect spelling.
