How to enter an answer
Type the country first, then a comma, then the capital: France, Paris. Press Enter to submit.
The comma separates the two parts. The country and capital are checked independently and must lead to the same dataset entry. “France, Madrid” is therefore rejected even though both terms are valid geographic names.
Why paired recall is useful
Country lists and capital lists can become two separate memories. A learner may produce “Ouagadougou” without immediately knowing Burkina Faso, or recognise Burkina Faso without retrieving its capital. Pair input forces both facts to be available in the same retrieval step.
Country cue
The first half tests the current name or an accepted country alternative.
Capital cue
The second half tests the current capital or a recognised alternative for that country.
Accepted formats and alternatives
Capitalisation is optional and spaces around the comma do not matter. Many country aliases and capital-language variants are accepted, so “UK, London” and “Austria, Wien” can be valid. A current primary form is still recommended for study notes.
For multiple-capital countries, more than one defensible pair may work. For example, South Africa can be paired with Pretoria, Cape Town or Bloemfontein. Sri Lanka can be paired with Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte or Colombo. The methodology page documents the reasoning behind these alternatives.
Best way to learn this mode
- Complete a region in Type Countries.
- Complete the same region in Type Capitals.
- Attempt Country + Capital without notes.
- Write down only the rejected or missing pairs.
- Retest the short missed list the next day.
Starting directly with 197 pairs creates unnecessary cognitive load. A player who can already retrieve both component lists will find paired practice much more productive.

Use errors to classify the problem
- If the country was wrong, return to Type Countries or Click the Country.
- If the capital was wrong, use Type Capitals and Random: Capital Only.
- If the two correct answers were mismatched, practise them as contrast pairs.
- If spelling blocked a genuine answer, verify the current standard spelling before adding it to notes.
Difficulty and timing
Paired answers take longer to type, so begin without a countdown. Count Up gives a pace baseline without ending the session. When accuracy is high, Count Down becomes a useful fluency test. Blitz is demanding because every response contains two facts and should be reserved for well-learned regions.
A strong completion standard
- The country and capital are retrieved as one relationship.
- The pair still works after a week without immediate review.
- You can reverse the direction when shown only the capital.
- You can locate the country on the map.
- You understand multiple-capital exceptions rather than memorising one oversimplified rule.
