How to Play GeoBlitz
GeoBlitz is an interactive, browser-based world geography platform with 15 distinct game modes covering the site's transparent 197-entry quiz roster. Whether training visual recall, practising capital cities, matching national flags or connecting overland border chains, here is how each feature operates.
Gameplay Modes Overview
• Type Countries & Type Capitals: Free recall modes where you type names or capital cities to progressively illuminate the SVG world map.
• Country + Capital: High-precision paired testing requiring both country and capital in exact sequence (e.g., "Germany, Berlin").
• Click-Based Modes: Visual recognition drills where you find and tap the correct country when prompted by its name, national flag, or capital city.
• Random Prompt Drills: High-speed diagnostic rounds where the map highlights a mystery territory and challenges you to name its identity under the clock.
• Guess the Outline: Silhouette recognition without surrounding map context, testing distinct maritime coastlines and borders.
• Border Chain: A topological puzzle mode where you connect two distant countries by naming a contiguous land border pathway.
• Border Blitz: A high-intensity neighbour drill where the map highlights a country and challenges you to name or tap all of its bordering land neighbours before the clock expires.
Accepted Aliases & Spelling Normalisation
GeoBlitz employs an intelligent spelling normaliser that strips diacritics, accents, punctuation, and case sensitivity. Accepted common abbreviations and colloquial aliases include: UK, USA, DRC, CAR, UAE, Cabo Verde, Ivory Coast, St Kitts and Nevis, Burma, and Holland. We also support localized translations across 11 major world languages.
Difficulty Levels & Timer Settings
Choose Count Down for a fixed time allocation, Count Up to measure completion time, or Off for untimed study. Difficulty changes the standard countdown allocation. In Border Chain and Border Blitz it also changes the number of rounds and their mode-specific time limits. Lives are a separate setting and are never changed silently by the difficulty choice.
Data Sources & Privacy
Map geometries are derived from Natural Earth 1:50m TopoJSON vectors. Personal-best records are saved in local browser storage. Consent-aware analytics also measure aggregate page and gameplay events such as mode, region and result; GeoBlitz does not create a public player profile.
