How a Border Chain puzzle works
The map highlights a start country and an end country. Type a neighbouring country to extend the route. Each new answer must share a recognised land border with the current end of one of your chains.
You can work from the start, from the destination or from both ends. The puzzle completes when the two routes connect. GeoBlitz then compares the number of steps with a shortest path computed from the same border graph used to validate the answers.
A simple example
For a route from Portugal to Poland, one valid chain is Portugal → Spain → France → Germany → Poland. Other valid routes may exist. The shortest comparison evaluates step count, not whether the route is culturally, historically or practically preferable.
What counts as a border
The mode uses land adjacency in its internal country graph. Maritime proximity does not count, so Australia cannot connect directly to Indonesia and the United Kingdom cannot connect directly to France. Bridge, tunnel and ferry connections do not create a land border for this puzzle.
Overseas territories and disputed boundaries create edge cases. GeoBlitz uses a consistent sovereign-state gameplay graph rather than treating every overseas possession as a route between parent states. The graph is a quiz model, not a legal boundary authority; details are documented in methodology and sources.
Strategy: find continental gateways

Work from both ends
If the start country has only one or two possible exits, establish them first. Then inspect the destination. A destination such as Portugal strongly suggests Spain; South Korea suggests North Korea in a land-only model. Once both ends are constrained, search for a central bridge rather than guessing every intermediate country in order.
Use countries with many neighbours
Large, centrally positioned states often provide efficient routes: Germany in Europe, China in Asia, Brazil in South America and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa. They are useful hubs, but a route through every hub is not automatically shortest. Compare the final path and examine where an unnecessary detour occurred.
What island countries teach
Some countries have no land neighbours and therefore cannot participate in an ordinary connected land route. This is a feature of border geography, not a missing answer. Island-state knowledge remains important elsewhere in GeoBlitz, but Border Chain naturally concentrates on connected landmasses.
Learning from the optimal path
Do not only read the score. Trace the shortest route on the map and identify the border you did not know. One newly learned adjacency can improve many future puzzles. Keep a small list such as “Austria borders Slovakia” or “Zambia borders Tanzania” and retest those relationships with a regional map.
Difficulty settings
Difficulty affects puzzle distance and pressure. Begin with shorter routes inside one region, where the path can be inspected visually. Longer world routes require gateway knowledge and are better once neighbouring-country recall is reliable. A timer should be added only after valid chains can be built without random country entry.
A border-learning routine
- Choose a region and play three untimed chains.
- Record every rejected adjacency.
- Inspect the shortest path after each puzzle.
- Open Click the Country and locate the new border pair.
- Return after several days and solve another route through the same area.
Signs of genuine improvement
- Fewer rejected neighbour guesses.
- Routes begin from constrained endpoints logically.
- Continental gateways are recalled without map searching.
- Path length moves closer to the shortest comparison.
- New border knowledge transfers to country-location modes.
